Vicksburg Golfers Can Choose Between Two Distinctly Different Courses

The golfing options in Vicksburg are a lot like the city itself. You can take a step back in time and visit an historic venue, or you can opt for a more modern facility. Either way, you will be met with Southern hospitality from both the people and the courses.

The old-school option can be found at the private Vicksburg Country Club. This course was built in 1929, two years after major flooding, farther upstream along the Mississippi River, brought thousands of new people to Vicksburg.

Like many courses built at the time, Vicksburg Country Club is short by today’s standards, measuring only 6,059 yards from the back tees. As a result, the par-70 layout rewards precision shooting over pure power.

But the lack of distance does not mean this is an easy course. Vicksburg CC is built on rolling terrain, which can result in some difficult lies. The fairways are tight, the greens are small and there are several water hazards that come into play throughout the course.

Greens fees, which include cart rental, range from $26 to play nine holes during the week to $56 for a full 18 holes on the weekend.

The municipal Clear Creek Golf Course is different from Vicksburg Country Club in many ways. In addition to being a public course, it is newer (it opened in 1977) and longer (6,600 yards) than Vicksburg CC. In fact, the driver might be the most important club for a golfer playing Clear Creek. Many of the fairways are long and straight, and even the par-3s have some distance to them.

While the Clear Creek course officially is more than 30 years old, the front nine actually is significantly newer than that. Comprehensive renovations took place on the front nine in 2004, with the greens being entirely rebuilt. Three of the greens were relocated to lengthen the holes and make them more aesthetically pleasing.

In addition to the work on the greens, 11 sand bunkers were added, several tee boxes were relocated, new cart paths were installed and the irrigation system was expanded. There are tentative plans to conduct a similar renovation of the back nine.

During the week it costs only $1 per hole to play Clear Creek without a cart. Weekend rates are $23 for 18 holes and $12 for nine holes. Cart rental is $13 for 18 holes and $7 for nine.
