Parks and Recreation Department
Alexandria’s Park and Recreation Department has 20 trails and 23 parks. The parks, of which 18 are dog parks (five fenced and 13 unfenced), stretch across more than 500 acres of green space. Other outdoor facilities include 62 boat slips at the city marina, 36 playground areas, 36 tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor pools. The Recreation Department has seven indoor recreational centers with weight centers, fitness rooms, dance studios, racquetball areas and more.
Sport leagues are available for all active residents. The adult league has seasonal sports throughout the year, such as co-ed volleyball, co-ed soccer, women’s flag football and men’s basketball. Youth can also participate in seasonal sports, such as boxing in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter, cheerleading and Alexandria Soccer Association League in the spring, rugby in the summer, and other sports year round. The department also offers specialized teen activities, such as monthly themed parties for Saturday night hype. Senior citizens can take part in water aerobics, bridge club and computer classes.
Golf
There are three golf courses in Alexandria and two in neighboring Fairfax county.
Belle Haven Country Club’s Belle Haven Course is the closest private course to D.C. and home of prestigious Four-Ball Tournament. Along with Belle Haven, Mount Vernon Country Club Course and Hilltop Golf Club Course are in Alexandria. The Pine Crest Golf Course and Greendale Golf Course are both located in Fairfax County.
