Alexandria, VA Public and Private School Overview

Alexandria is home to some of the top private schools in the Washington D.C. area, but also provides public education through Alexandria City Public Schools.

Public Schools

Alexandria Public School System educates more than 10,000 students in 17 schools. The school system received a Magna Award from the American School Board Journal for excellence.

The school system has 13 elementary schools for grades K-5 and two middle schools for grades 6-8, George Washington Middle School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School. The middle schools break down into separate campuses across the city and also offer International Baccalaureate courses to students. Students additionally attend grades 6-8 at Jefferson Houston School that runs K-8.

Public school students then attend T.C. Williams High School. The school has two campuses: the Minnie Williams school is for ninth grade, and the main campus teaches grades 10-12. The school has one of the only Organic Chemistry classes in the state and a multimillion dollar technology integration program, which is used to give students hands-on experience. Students can also participate in their athletic programs, such as the championship rowing team or the Titans football team, depicted in the movie Remember the Titans.

Private Schools

A number of area D.C. top private schools are found in Alexandria. One of these is St. Stephen and St. Agnes, which has three different locations. The school has a nationally ranked lacrosse team and award-winning theater program to offer to its students. There are 29 private schools overall, ranging from secular, Christian and Islamic.
