Art Scene Thrives in Downtown Asheboro
Downtown Asheboro is home to several works of art, thanks to the City of Asheboro, the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce Downtown Development Committee, the Heart of North Carolina Visitors Bureau and the Randolph Arts Guild.
The city’s downtown area features a variety of sculptures, many of which were submitted by local artists.
“The sculptures primarily came about as a way to get people downtown to enjoy the area, and to provide a cultural experience that would be unique,” says Derrick Sides, Executive Director of the Randolph Arts Guild.
Each year, the Randolph Arts Guild puts out a call for sculptures and receives submissions from artists across the country. The chosen sculptures are on display for approximately 18 months, and are located in various areas downtown. While some are easily seen, others are in more intimate areas.
In addition to sculptures, Asheboro’s downtown also includes murals created by local artists, including Susan Harrell. She has restored the area’s “Randolph Memories” mural, which faces Fayetteville Street, and has also created a mural of three polar bears on the side of The Flying Pig sports bar.
“People really embrace the arts here and appreciate the value that they can provide to people’s lives,” Sides says.
