Asheboro/Randolph County Has Many Sites to See
There is a lot to see and do in Asheboro/Randolph County, with attractions that can showcase art, sculpture, pottery, theater, museum works or even beautiful park settings.
Carolina Bronze Sculpture
Carolina Bronze Sculpture in Seagrove is a foundry specializing in bronze casting and the fabrication of sculptures created by artists throughout the United States. Works that have been produced by the company include a 10-foot bronze sculpture of Ronald Reagan that now graces the U.S. Embassy in London on Grosvenor Square, and a sculpture of astronaut Neil Armstrong in front of the engineering school at the University of Purdue where he attended college.
“I was a former sculpture teacher at the University of Tulane, and when I wasn’t tenured, many of my students suggested I start a business like I have now,” says Ed Walker, owner of Carolina Bronze Sculpture. “I’m originally from North Carolina, so I established my business in Seagrove because it is such a beautiful community.”
North Carolina Pottery Center
Also in Seagrove, the art of pottery is celebrated at North Carolina Pottery Center. For more than 200 years, Seagrove has been a haven for talented potters, and the center's permanent collection contains more than 800 pieces of pottery, artifacts and photographs.
Sunset Theatre
Downtown Asheboro is home to Sunset Theatre, a 1930s jewel that was Asheboro’s first bona fide movie house. Built in the Spanish style, the building went through several transitions before being purchased by the city, and is now operated by Asheboro Cultural & Recreation Services.
Richard Petty Museum
If you like your cultural outings to have a little more power under the hood, then race to the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman. The Petty Museum is a treasure trove of the NASCAR superstar's career mementos and trophies, and also features a mini-theater, race cars and a NASCAR historical review.
North Carolina Aviation Museum
The North Carolina Aviation Museum offers a comprehensive look at North Carolina flight, with 15 vintage planes dating from World War II through the Vietnam era. There are also displays of military uniforms, medals and other artifacts. It is headquartered at Asheboro Municipal Airport, and there is also an aviation hall of fame in the building.
Bicentennial Park
Bicentennial Park in Asheboro is small but scenic at one acre, and features a pavilion, fountain, picnic table and memory walk. Like all parks in Asheboro and Randolph County, Bicentennial is open from sunrise to sunset.
