Asheboro’s first movie theatre, the Sunset Theatre, remains a local hot spot for entertainment after more than eight decades. The historic structure is one of several in downtown Asheboro, where it serves as a venue for many uses, including movies, concerts, live theatre, parties and other special events.

Built in 1930 by Kirby Cox, the Sunset Theatre belongs to the City of Asheboro and is managed by the Department of Cultural and Recreation Services.
The theater hosts several events that appeal to those on a budget. Frugal families can enjoy a new release or classic film with concessions for $5. Friday Night Bluegrass events also are only $5 in advance or $7 at the door.

Event planners also use the Sunset Theatre for parties and other special occasions. Spaces for rent include the theatre itself for smaller gatherings, for which hosts may either bring a favorite DVD or select one from the theatre archives. For those with a more spectacular party in mind, there is also a party room available for up to 400 guests.
