Bend is Becoming a Wine City
In the unassuming town of Bend, OR, a little eruption occurred when Scott and Liz Ratcliffe moved to town. They brought their love of wine with them, and soon after Volcano Vineyards was born. Classified as a micro-winery, Volcano produces about 1,000 cases of wine per year and operates a tasting room in Downtown Bend which will soon be moving to a new location on the westside of town. Their wines have consistently earned impressive accolades, from a gold medal for their 2006 Syrah from the 2009 NW Wine Summit to a four-year winning streak at the Sommelier Challenge for its 2006 Merlot. Just 25 miles north of Bend in Culver, OR is Maragas Winery specializing in Bordeaux style reds and signature bottle-art. The Margaras's take a hands-on approach to winemaking, and invite guests to do the same. This year saw the introduction of the First Annual Grape Stomp, where guests can take part in the famed stomping of the grapes, as well as the Margaras Winery Dude Ranch, which substitutes cows for bottling wine.
