Oxford, MS, has a genteel atmosphere even when more than 65,000 screaming football fans roll into town to cheer for Ole Miss. While there is an equal number of permanent residents and college students, the town retains a sophisticated feel. That comes from the care city leaders take in preserving historic buildings and the fact that business owners know their clients have an appreciation for the finer things in life.
The doors to The University of Mississippi Museum are open to the entire community, which includes Rowan Oak, the home of writer William Faulkner. Residents 65 and older have the chance to take tuition-free courses. Ole Miss Theatre auditions are open to both students and residents, and theater programing can be enjoyed by all. Oxford's pathways make getting around on foot or bike very easy and safe.
A big part of Oxford's culture is being social, and there are many events and spaces to get you in the mix. The Square is the place to go for food, drinks, music and fun. This part of town is routinely packed with people as the weekend nears. Nine local parks offer walking trails, playgrounds and athletic fields, while camping, fishing and hiking can be enjoyed at four nearby forest areas.
