Beach Vacation

We know there are folks who just can't imagine going anywhere but a beach for spring break. While the college party crowd tends to take over some towns, there are still great places for a family-friendly trip where you won't have to cover the kids' eyes or worry about being woken up at midnight by revelers.

Charleston, SC, is one of the most family-friendly cities on the east coast. In addition to 40 miles of beachfront loaded with things to do, this city offers attractions that appeal to both parents and children. To sum it up, Charleston has an “awe factor.” You'll find a large collection of historical attractions and sites in Charleston, as well as parks, plantations, gardens and museums.

Among the most popular attractions is the South Carolina Aquarium, where visitors can see albino alligators, sharks, otters, stingrays and watch divers swim in a huge tank. Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began, is one of the most visited sites in Charleston. Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum offers tours of the USS Clamagore submarine, the USS Laffey destroyer and USS Yorktown aircraft carrier. There are paddle wheel tours, culinary tours, pirate guided tours, graveyard tours, fishing tours, Segway tours and aerial tours. Golfers have their pick of more than 15 luscious courses, and shoppers have dozens of places to search for gifts, souvenirs and clothes.

There are more than 180 restaurants, and lowcountry and fresh seafood is never hard to find. If you do crave a taste of the party scene there are several bars, breweries and the Charleston Brews Cruise.

Restaurants: 180-plus*

Shops: 230-plus*

Don't miss: Middleton Place, home to America's oldest landscaped gardens and a house built in 1755.
