Boulder, CO, is hard at work building a greener community.
The city has mandatory green building standards, and in 2007 it became the first city to put a carbon tax on electricity produced by fossil fuels. Today, 75 percent of its electricity is produced by coal, and the city requires all new buildings to be energy efficient in compliance with its BuildSmart program.
The city relies on innovative ideas like the Eco Pass, a card that allows residents to ride the bus for free and therefore reduce traffic, to make their green goals a reality.
