Burlington’s food scene is as fabulous as its scenery – and some restaurants combine both.

The Ice House Restaurant & Bar has views of Lake Champlain and the mountains, and a menu of contemporary cuisine that emphasizes local products. It’s in a renovated 19th-century ice house on Battery Street.

Local is a big theme here. Sweetwaters, on Church Street, uses locally raised organic produce and fresh seasonal products, changing its menu twice a year to accommodate the harvest. Another wonderful setting, Sweetwaters has an atrium, two-story mural and outdoor dining.

Burlington without a farmers’ market providing locally grown and produced foods would be, well, unthinkable. It’s held at City Hall Park every Saturday from Mother’s Day to Halloween, nice weather or not, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Eclectic is another common thread. Hideaway At Cornerstone Commons is a stylish spot with a wide-ranging menu and great atmosphere. The Daily Planet, on Center Street, serves up everything from rainbow trout to fajitas to lamb stew to seafood Newburg. Back on Church Street, unique flavors from across the globe combine at Tilley’s Café, which gets fresh fish from Hawaii flown in several times a week and also offers vegetarian dishes. Tilley’s also will accommodate special requests with dishes that are 80 percent gluten-free.

Burlington and beer – the good, handcrafted stuff – are nearly synonymous. In fact, Burlington is the only U.S. city in the top five of Sherman Travel's list of cities for beer lovers. Both of the city's microbreweries – Vermont Pub & Brewery and Magic Hat Brewing Company – are nationally acclaimed, and several other spots offer other ales handcrafted in the region.

Pizza and Italian joints are big draws. Notable are Leonardo’s Pizza on Pearl Street and L’Amante Ristorante on College Street, which makes everything but for some key Italian imports on site.

The tasty offerings around town seem to never end. Of course, everyone knows by now that Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream was born here. But did you know Lake Champlain Chocolates gives free tours?
