The top industries in Natchez, Miss., include banking, tourism, retail and health care, and the growing Port of Natchez.

The economy of Natchez-Adams is led by many strong sectors, including manufacturing, health care, banking, retail, the Port of Natchez and a growing tourism industry. Here is why it is advantageous to do business in Natchez-Adams County:

Assets to Companies

Natchez-Adams County is in the south-central U.S., and companies benefit from favorable operating costs and low taxes. For both new and existing companies, the area has a quality workforce, state-sponsored training and a one-stop environmental permitting program if a company wants to construct a building. Also, career training and job placement assistance is available to Natchez area residents at places like Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the Natchez WIN Job Center.

Work Ready Initiative

The Miss Lou Region has launched an initiative to become a certified "Work Ready Region," as conferred by ACT, Inc., a status nationally recognized as a powerful workforce and economic development tool. More than 50 local employers have already signed on to support the initiative.

Port of Natchez

The port specializes in handling heavy containers and pallets of commodities ranging from automobiles to zucchini, and it offers the ability to ship to all destinations along the Mississippi River, as well as Europe, Latin America and the Far East. Located at the port is Natchez Railroad that connects with Canadian National Railroad, while truck drivers have easy access to U.S. Highways 61, 84 and 98 that connect with Interstates 10, 20 and 55.

Manufacturing Leaders

Large employers in the manufacturing industry are experiencing economic success in Natchez-Adams County. They include Blain Companies (heavy highway construction), Delta-Energy Group (carbon products recycling), Great River Industries (specialty fabrication), J.M. Jones Lumber (wood milling), Rives & Reynolds Lumber, and von Drehle Corp. (paper products).

Oil and Natural Gas Companies

Several area companies are involved with the oil and natural gas sector, including Callon Petroleum Co., Energy Drilling, El Toro Oil, Genesis Energy and Delta Energy.

Other Large Natchez Employers

Magnolia Bluffs Casino has a strong presence in Adams County, while health care is well represented by Merit Health Natchez. For retail, Wal-Mart Supercenter as well as Supermarket Operations each employ about 250 people, while Natchez-Adams School District employs more than 600 teachers, administrators and staffers. Jordan Carriers freight hauling company employs 250, and Southwest Mississippi Planning & Development District employs many professional grant writers who secure funding for various facets of local government projects.
