Real Estate Options in Kershaw County Range from Historic Districts to New Subdivisions
Street names in Kershaw County illustrate the variety of real estate available in the area.
There are Saddle Street and Winning Ticket Road, suggestive of the equine culture in Kershaw County, and there are Walden Place and Sailing Club, both located on scenic Lake Wateree.
And the price range for homes is just as varied as the neighborhoods.
According to trulia.com, the average listing price for homes in Kershaw County’s several zip codes ranges from below $103,000 to over $241,000. While there are newer subdivisions catering to everything from community living to the equine lifestyle, Kershaw County also has not lost sight of its past. Two areas, Camden Historic District and Kendall Mill Historic District, are both on the National Register of Historic Places.
Camden Historic District
The Camden Historic District, at the heart of the county seat, was a significant center of activity during both the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and its buildings reflect these two periods of time. The district comprises buildings that include homes, businesses and churches in the bustling downtown.
Kendall Mill Historic District
Kendall Mill Historic District is not as old as downtown Camden, but represents the presence and impact of the textile industry in the area and in the state. It is a typical “mill village,” with simple, practical homes, which originally grew around the Wateree Plant at the turn of the 20th century. A renovated mill home in this district, full of charm, history and open spaces, recently went on the market in the low $100,000s.
Bethune
Camden isn’t the only town with a passion for preserving the past, though. Bethune also features carefully restored historic homes and claims to be a quiet town “where turn-of-the-century Southern charm reigns supreme.” Along the same lines, Boykin showcases a working water-powered grist mill, which still grinds and sells cornmeal and grits.
Lake Wateree
Lake Wateree’s draw is obvious, especially when it comes to sportsmen and women who are interested in fishing for crappie, bass, catfish, and bream in one of South Carolina's oldest man-made lakes. Lake Wateree offers more than 13,000 surface acres and 242 miles of shoreline, including beautiful residential areas.
Elgin
Elgin is located on U.S. 1 between Camden and Columbia. The population of the Town of Elgin is only about 1,000 people, but due to new development, including a new sewer system, population in the surrounding areas adds up to about 25,000.
Also on U.S. 1, Lugoff isn’t far from Elgin and is the home of the multimillion-dollar Invista Plant, which was formerly DuPont.
The only lifestyle not available in Kershaw County is big-city living, but some would say that’s a good thing. And with the state capital, Columbia, only 30 minutes away, residents can take advantage of big-city assets. There are the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and other major musical, artistic and entertainment events.
