Casper Cuisine Ranges From Cosmopolitan Creations to Classic Cowboy Fare

Good grub, whether uptown, down-home or fast food, is in good supply in Casper. Bar-and-grill-style eateries abound, as do steakhouses and cafes where a cup of joe might be served with a homemade treat on the side.

Steak, a Western staple, is the specialty at Poor Boys Steakhouse. Here, Chef Jared Gonzalez, aka “Keeper of the Flame,” promises “good food cooked right, the Western way…with fire.” Sure they offer chicken and fish, but one look at a sizzling steak and one’s inner cowboy will be hard-pressed to resist.

When it comes to fine dining in downtown Casper, the magic number is 303, where a charming, old exterior gives way to a sleek, modern interior and contemporary dining experience. Perhaps the night calls for salmon with the chef’s own teriyaki glaze. The taste-bud-boggling dessert menu includes mochi ice cream, which the restaurant refers to as “bite-sized balls of happiness.” Owners Serge and Lillian d’Elia also offer an array of choices from Serge’s extensive wine collection as well as their Elixirs cocktail lounge with options that would impress even the “Sex and the City” cosmo-istas.

The comforting smell of warm bread might be coming from First Street Bakers, a family-owned café and bakery with homemade bread and bagels made from original recipes. Hunger-busting lunches include a meatball sub with cheesy vegetable soup. Everyone knows to save room for dessert when dining at a bakery; taking home a caramel roll might be advised as well.

Jazz lovers and those pining for a taste of New Orleans can head to The Jazz Spot, where house favorites include the BBC, a Kaiser-enfolded burger with all the trimmings, including crisp bacon, smoked cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce. Live music on the weekends.

Fill body and soul at the Old Filling Station at Three Crowns Golf Course. Visitors select from oil-industry-themed entrees and dine while gazing at Casper Mountain. Lunch might call for The Flare Stack (pastrami) sandwich or a blackened-chicken number dubbed The Reactor.
