Charlotte, NC, doesn't shy away from building a more sustainable community.

The city hosts its annual Charlotte Green and Clean festival, an event that offers green seminars on topics such as energy awareness and how to build a green home. The city is dedicated to becoming “a national leader in environmental initiatives,” and thanks to programs like the Environment Focus Area Plan, it's well on its way. The plan focuses on protecting natural resources, promoting recycling and preserving land, among other things.

In addition, Charlotte has a Smart Growth plan that focuses on ways to safeguard the environment while planning for expansion. In 2007, the city established its Urban Street Design guidelines, which aim to redesign Charlotte's streets to make them more accessible for drivers and safer for pedestrians, while also providing more options for transportation.
