Festivals near Dickson, TN
The historic town of Charlotte‚ population 1‚360‚ has a tradition of special events and activities that is highly unusual for a town of its size.
Even more unusual‚ the city‚ with the help of donations and some tax revenue‚ usually picks up the tab as a way of giving something back to the people.
Charlotte Easter Egg Hunt
For example‚ the City of Charlotte Easter Egg Hunt draws several hundred people each year.
More than 500 eggs are decorated for kids to find. All children who attend are given a prize and get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.
“People really seem to enjoy it‚” city clerk Bonnie Duke says‚ “especially the pictures.”
On a summer Saturday afternoon‚ an event for the big kids rolls into town – the antique car show on the square. As many as 41 vintage model cars come from Nashville‚ Dickson and Waverly to park and be seen for the show.
If parties and parades are more your speed‚ don’t miss the Charlotte Festival each August. The fun-filled day features the Charlotte Middle School marching band; vendor booths; homemade ice cream; rock‚ country and gospel music; kiddie train rides; and a balloon bounce.
Volunteers pitch in to help, and the county and local banks make donations to defray a portion of the cost.
Fun in Charlotte is a team effort spearheaded by three-term mayor Bill Davis and supported by six active and involved city council members. During the Christmas season‚ City Hall has two open houses‚ one for the general public with food for all‚ plus tree ornaments and pictures with Santa for the kids. The second open house is a holiday mixer for business owners on the square.
In addition to sponsoring special events‚ the city maintains a walking track in Charlotte Park and a small park near the square includes tables where people can eat a relaxed lunch‚ a pavilion and a swing for kids.
“We have the oldest operating court house in Tennessee‚ and we have a lot of people coming in‚” Davis says. “I’d like to see the square be something people will be proud of. The historical lights really add to it.”
During the winter holiday season the city illuminates the old courthouse with floodlights‚ and everyone on the square decorates for Christmas‚ Davis adds. “Charlotte gets prettier all the time‚” Duke says.
