Diverse Monument Boulevard District Takes Center Stage
Concord has big plans for the future of Monument Boulevard Corridor, a vibrant neighborhood that is both a commercial hub and residential area.
The corridor has a large immigrant population that makes it one of city’s more diverse neighborhoods.
“There’s a strong population that lives along the corridor, and the diversity and ethnicity creates a strong sense of community in the area,” says John Montagh, business development manager for the city of Concord.
The corridor has a rich variety of ethnic restaurants, notably Mexican eateries, Montagh says. But it also has a Polish deli and an Afghan bakery. “There’s definitely an international flavor to the Monument Corridor,” he says.
The city is in the midst of making vital improvements to the neighborhood, including developing an urban design plan and guidelines that lay out a vision to attract business and improve the quality of life for residents.
The project will study the landscape of the area and recommend ways to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, overall public safety, lighting and streetscape design and enhance the entire look of the corridor.
And it lays out a vision for future private and public development.
“It’s going to take everything into consideration and come up with the best laid plan possible,” Montagh says of the project.
A FoodMaxx grocery store recently relocated to the corridor and community and business leaders believe the project will attract even more local and national stores.
