Education, Recreation and Culture Converge at Crossing at the Dan
A centerpiece of downtown Danville, Crossing at the Dan first appears to be a complex of restored old buildings near the Dan River. Get in a bit closer, and you’ll see a lot going on any given day. The site consists of a live performance venue called Carrington Pavilion, which is located on what was formerly called Auctioneers’ Park, where the tobacco was once sold. Nearby are two renovated Southern Railway buildings – now used to house a train station and portions of the Danville Science Center. And there is another building bearing a retro Pepsi logo, which is used for public and private events. According to www.visitdanville.com, the Pepsi Building originally was used in 1885 by the Continental Brewing Co., then as the Robert Portner Brewing Company, which – due to Prohibition – became Celery Cola Bottling Company in 1931. Crossing at the Dan also serves as one of three trail entry points for the Riverwalk Trail, a 7.5-mile paved path that runs along the Dan River. The trail is frequented by walkers, bikers, joggers and roller bladers and is handicap-accessible. For more information on the Riverwalk Trail, visit the City of Danville Web site.
