Elizabeth City residents have their health care needs covered, thanks to Albemarle Health.

A University Health Systems affiliate, Albemarle Health is northeastern North Carolina’s largest regional health and wellness provider. It serves a seven-county region and is made up of Albemarle Hospital, Regional Medical Center, Regional Oncology Center, Island Medical Center, Gates County Medical Center, Sleep Center and Community Care Clinics.

Albemarle Hospital

Albemarle Hospital is the hub of the Albemarle Health System, with services that include inpatient hospitalization, advanced surgery, an expansive rehabilitation program, the region's most sophisticated diagnostic center, same-day ambulatory surgery, urgent and emergency care, and a regional oncology center.

The hospital also provides education and support groups as well as charity care for patients in need. In addition to its health care impact, Albemarle Hospital is an important economic resource for the region. The system employs more than 900 people regionally, with more than $54 million in annual payroll.

Community Care Clinics

To help meet the needs of uninsured patients, the Albemarle Hospital Foundation operates Community Care Clinics in Elizabeth City and Tyner, offering free physician care, screenings and prescription drugs to those without insurance.

The Foundation opened Community Care Clinics to provide more comprehensive care to a six-county area, and the now-larger Elizabeth City location serves patients in Pasquotank, Camden and Currituck counties.

The recently remodeled Tyner location serves patients in Chowan, Gates and Perquimans counties. With dedicated staff members and approximately 50 volunteers, the clinics are able to assist the under-served population in two areas: primary care and prescription services.

Coastal Pediatrics

Also in Elizabeth City is Coastal Pediatrics, which prides itself on being the only pediatric practice serving the Elizabeth City area for more than 30 years. The staff includes board-certified physicians whose goal is the health and development of children, and Coastal Pediatrics participates in the Scholastics Reach Out and Read program and community events that focus on children’s well being. The clinic is three miles from Albemarle Hospital.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Pain Specialists

Comprehensive Rehabilitation in Elizabeth City treats people who have pain in their back, neck, knee, hip or shoulder before or after surgery. The rehabilitation physicians also treat people who have weakness from a stroke or some nerve injury, and even those who have had amputations or spinal cord injuries. The practice utilizes a comprehensive approach using medications, physical and occupational therapy, and appropriate injections into muscles or joints.
