Serene scenes here at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains inspire creativity, resulting in a culture with multiple outlets for artists and patrons of the visual and performing arts.

Arts Organizations

Two organizations support the growing arts community in the Fulton-Montgomery Region. The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network was founded by 30 local artists in 1997. SVAN’s mission is to promote the arts throughout the Sacandaga region by improving the quantity, quality and diversity of cultural programming in the area and improving opportunities for local artists. SVAN sponsors dozens of art-related events, including  rotating art shows at the Northville Public Library.

In Fultonville, Friends of the Visual and Performing Arts is a volunteer organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for youth and adults to experience the arts in the Mohawk Valley region. It began in 1996 as a summer arts program in a rural area and has grown to include programs on photography, music, creative writing and an annual Summer Music and Art Festival in August.

Visual Arts

Visual artists who are part of the SVAN network can show their work at the SVAN Artists’ Gallery at the Fulton County Visitor Center at Vail Mills. The SVAN gallery periodically hosts open house receptions that draw local residents, as well as out-of-town guests, to view artwork, talk with the artists and purchase their works.

In Canajoharie, visitors can browse a permanent collection of paintings by distinguished artists at the Arkell Museum, named for Bartlett Arkell. Arkell was an avid traveler and fan of art who purchased many of the paintings for the people of Canajoharie. There are also changing exhibits featuring Mohawk Valley history.

The Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce has an art gallery in its Gloversville office at the corner of Fulton and Main Streets. And the Micropolis Art Gallery in downtown Gloversville gives art lovers a look at the diversity of visual arts in Fulton County, featuring local artists from a variety of media, including photography, painting and textiles.

Want to try your hand at ceramic art? The Orendaga on Northville Lake, an overnight inn, contains the Bellwether Ceramic Studio and the Main House Gallery. The ceramic studio offers a series of classes and workshops and showcases local artwork.

Performing Arts

When the performing arts take center stage in Fulton and Montgomery counties, the action happens more often than not at the Glove Theatre. Located in downtown Gloversville, the Glove Theatre entertains audiences throughout the year with music performances, community theater, comedy, holiday shows and more.

Local residents who prefer to be on stage rather than in the audience can find a creative outlet with the Ful-Mont Repertoire Theatre Co. Based in Gloversville, Ful-Mont is a traveling theater troupe of veteran actors as well as experts in costumes, makeup and theatrical design.
