Greenways
More than 30 parks and other recreational areas provide ample open space, trails and playing fields for residents and visitors, while the popular 6-mile Idaho Falls Riverwalk is ideal for walking or biking along both sides of the Snake River. Sports Leagues and Programs
People of all ages can participate in multiple leagues, classes and programs in just about every sport imaginable. The city’s 26 youth programs include soccer, baseball, football, tennis, girls’ volleyball, softball and basketball as well as a summer running program for ages 8-14, martial arts and beginner dance classes for ages 8-13. Similarly, adult programs include multiple sports, healthy weight loss, fitness classes, co-ed sand volleyball, archery and more.
Golf
Hit ‘em far and straight (hopefully) at three golf courses owned and operated by the city. Pinecrest, Sage Lakes and Sand Creek are 18-hole championship courses with varying terrain and unique challenges. A six-hole short course at Sand Creek is also an option. Pinecrest features two practice greens and a short-game practice area, while Sage Lakes and Sand Creek both offer all-grass driving ranges along with two large practice greens.
Disc Golf
Disc golf is played on an 18-hole, walkable course at Freeman Park. While some sports stores sell special golf discs to aim toward the metal baskets that serve as hole targets, a regular, Frisbee-style disc will work as well. The rules are similar to those in club golf.
New Splash Pad
In June 2016, the City of Ammon celebrated the opening of a spacious new splash pad attraction in McCowin Park. The summertime destination for kids and parents features seven splash stations and 25 water jets. The $120,000 project included a $15,000 donation from Rockwell Homes for a waterslide feature.
Skate Parks and Ice Rink
The city operates a free outdoor skate park in Tautphaus Park near the zoo, featuring a concrete bowl with metal coping, hips and a capsule along with a street course filled with launch ramps, stairs, rails and ledges. In addition, an indoor skate park, Skate Hard Idaho, opened in 2016 on Jones Street, complete with a skateboard shop that stocks preferred brands like Alva, Bones, Dogtown, Real, Street Plant and Toy Machine. The park, which has a $3 fee, is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. For fans of ice skating, the city’s Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena in Tautphaus Park is available for public skating during the winter months, beginning in October.
