Disc golf originated in 1975 when the first pole-hole course was established in Oak Grove Park, Calif. Today there are more than 1,500 disc golf courses around the world, including in Jackson's Muse Park.

The sport, which replaces a traditional golf ball with a Frisbee-like disc and a hole on the green with a basket, is played similar to its cousin, but relies on a disc thrown at metal “pole holes” or elevated baskets. But unlike golf, disc golf is relatively inexpensive to play.

Discs can be purchased at local sporting goods stores, but the game can also be played with a simple Frisbee. Disc golf is suitable for all ages, and much like traditional golf, participants try to navigate the course with the least number of throws.

A wooded trail originally cleared for bicycles in Muse Park off North Parkway became the city’s first public disc golf course.

The park already offered the natural environment needed for family recreation, and now people in the area won’t have to drive to Memphis or Nashville to play disc golf. In the near future, the residents hope the city can sponsor disc golf leagues that will compete in tournaments.
