Anyone in Walker County who likes to fish, boat and partake in other water recreation activities knows all about Walker County Lake.

The 163-acre waterway is situated only three miles southeast of Jasper off U.S. Highway 78 and is regularly stocked with catfish, bluegill and sunfish. Bass fishing on Walker County Lake is good throughout the year, especially from February through April when the fish are near the bank. The best catches for catfish are during the summer months, and the lake also has a country store, dock and boat launch, and picnic tables are situated at several sites. Also close to the water is Riverside Fly Shop, which sells a wide array of fishing supplies that range from flies and rods to felt sole boots and waders.

Meanwhile, residents of Walker County – especially those in Jasper and Curry – also have easy access to Lewis Smith Lake, which spans 21,000 acres through Walker, Cullman and Winston counties. Lewis Smith Lake also has good catches of bass, catfish and bluegill, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ranks it the second-cleanest lake in America, only behind Lake Tahoe.
