The mountain culture of Kingston and Roane County is on display all year long, with interesting attractions and events. Here are some examples:

Rocky Top General Store

This is the 21st century, isn’t it? Customers arriving in the parking lot at Rocky Top General Store in Harriman might have to remind themselves of that, since the quaint and rustic store looks like a throwback to simpler times. It remains an enigma in 2011, serving as a general store and a museum – all in the same setting. Get a roll of chicken wire or a 50-pound bag of rabbit food right here, and Rocky Top General Store also sponsors the Tennessee Polk Salad Festival & Pageant that is held the second Saturday in May each year.

Southern Appalachia Railway Museum's Secret City Scenic Excursion Train

Secret City trains depart from Heritage Center near Oak Ridge and wind along Poplar Creek and Highway 327, in the beautiful hills and valleys of East Tennessee. Each round trip travels 14 miles and lasts one hour, and trains are pulled by 1950s vintage Alco diesel locomotives. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.

Kingston's Country Fair

Kingston's Country Fair is held every fall with thousands of people in attendance to celebrate the harvest and take in the agricultural sights. There are rides, concerts and plenty of educational opportunities, and several bands are on hand to play bluegrass music. Other attractions include dog shows, pie eating contests, a greased pig chase and needle-in-the-haystack games.

Smokin' on the Water

Kingston celebrates the Fourth of July with a festival called Smokin' on the Water, with most of the events during the day centered around the waterfront of Watts Bar Lake. Activities include a Miss Firecracker Pageant, drag boat races, live bands, a homemade raft race, classic car show and children's activities. And, oh yes, a spectacular fireworks show occurs after dark over the water.
