Only one candy company can claim the official candy of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby, and that's Ruth Hunt Candy in Mt. Sterling, KY.
It all began in the Mt. Sterling kitchen of Ruth Hunt, where she served homemade sweets to her bridge club, friends and family. In 1921 she decided to start a small candy business. Today, still located in Mt. Sterling, Ruth Hunt Candies is a Kentucky landmark.
The company's famous candies, made with the finest of ingredients and no waxes, include unforgettable bourbon balls and the "Blue Monday" candy bar, a Kentucky pulled cream candy covered in dark chocolate. Ruth Hunt makes about 70 total candy varieties.
Visitors to the city can take a tour of the factory – recently designated an official "Kentucky landmark" by the governor – and enjoy the official candies of the Kentucky Derby in beautiful Churchill Downs keepsake boxes.
Those further away can visit the candymaker's website and order a case of sweet stuff to be delivered to their door.
