Lafayette, LA is a Top Family Vacation Destination
Grab the family and head to Lafayette, LA, for some big spring break fun on the bayou.
The city offers swamp tours through Atchafalaya Basin, the largest swamp in the United States, and Lake Martin where local wildlife – including alligators – can be spotted from the safety of a boat. Still haven't had your fill of critters? Head to the Zoo of Acadiana to see more than 550 animals.
Lafayette, known to many as the unofficial capital of French Louisiana, also features cultural opportunities such as the Lafayette Natural History Museum and the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, where visitors can learn more about life in the area. Kids can enjoy hands-on exhibits at the Children's Museum of Acadiana and can explore the many parks and playgrounds the area has to offer.
Since the city is home to the highest number of restaurants per capita of any city in the country, there's always a place to go to quell your hunger. Try some Cajun cuisine at Prejean's and Blue Dog Cafe, or check out one of city's most popular Mexican eateries, La Fonda.
If your spring break takes place during March or April, be sure to make time for Downtown Alive, a series of free outdoor concerts. The performances occur most Fridays during these early spring months.
Don't miss: Paddling trails, which are experienced in a canoe and go through the state's rivers, bayous, lakes and other waterways; visit www.louisianapaddle.com to choose the trail you'd like to paddle.
