Martinsville, Virginia is a small town with lots to do. Race fans flock to Martinsville Speedway for events throughout the year, and golf enthusiasts enjoy a variety of courses. The Smith River is a great place to fish, and its associated Smith River Trail System provides opportunities for hiking and cycling. Team sports abound at the new Smith River Sports Complex. And in warm-weather months, Uptown Martinsville hosts a monthly concert series and farmers market.

NASCAR Racing at Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville's main spectator sports attraction, Martinsville Speedway, unveiled $2 million in improvements for race fans in April 2011. Major capital improvements include a new building that houses two concession stands and two restroom facilities, plus a widened grandstand concourse area. Still other improvements pay homage to the historic track's past, such as a 20-foot mural featuring Martinsville Speedway founder H. Clay Earles and NASCAR founder Bill France, retro neon signage, plus banners depicting scenes from the historic track's earlier days, which date back to 1947.

Martinsville Speedway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races per year, each attracting more than 60,000 fans. The track also hosts many other major events, such as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 - Late Model Stock Race.

Smith River Outdoor Recreation

The Smith River provides a great place for residents of Martinsville to participate in a variety of outdoor activities, from fishing to hiking surrounding trails. Fishermen come to the Smith River to angle in what's been named one of the best trout streams in the nation. Rainbow and brown trout populate the river from the Philpott Dam downstream to Martinsville between October and May. The area surrounding the river has a system of trails, perfect for hiking and mountain biking.

Youth and Adult League Sports

For those who enjoy league sports, the Smith River Sports Complex provides spectacular new facilities. The complex includes 90 acres of multi-use fields for lacrosse, soccer, football, field hockey, Ultimate Frisbee and more.

Family-friendly Activities

The local Martinsville-Henry County YMCA offers everything from swim lessons to playgrounds and youth camps.

A fun family outing just a short drive from uptown Martinsville is Beaver Creek Reservoir. Bring the boat, fishing rods and a picnic lunch and you’re all set for a day in the great outdoors.

Golf

There are five golf courses in the Martinsville-Henry County area,  each providing great golfing suited to a wide range of skill levels. The Beaver Hills Golf Club is the single public option while the Forest Park, Lynwood and Bassett clubs are semi-private. Chatmoss Country Club is a private course.
