Rio Grande Valley Vipers Basketball Team in McAllen, TX
The 2013-2014 basketball season is only the seventh for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers franchise, yet the National Basketball Association Development League team has already won two championships – in 2010 and 2013.
The NBA Development League is the official minor league for the National Basketball Association. The Vipers, affiliated with the NBA's Houston Rockets, play their home games at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo. The team is one of only two teams in history to win a pair of NBA D-League titles, the Asheville Altitude also winning twice. In 2013 after the Vipers' second championship, player Andrew Goudelock was named league MVP and was called up the by the Los Angeles Lakers. Vipers head coach, Nick Nurse, advanced to the NBA as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors.
Rio Grande Valley plays a 50-game season from November through early April. Season tickets range from $49 behind the baskets to $1,250 along the court. Single-game tickets are $7 and up. RGV competes in the D-League's Central Division against opponents such as Austin, Iowa, Sioux Falls, Texas and Tulsa.
The Vipers participate in a number of charities and promotional giveaway nights, and sponsor a Junior Vipers Membership Club for children ages 5-15. The team also has a cheerleading dance squad called the Snake Charmers.
