Here's a salute to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division, which is a vital United States Department of Defense naval military installation located in Charles County.

The mission at NSWC Indian Head is to research, develop, test, evaluate and produce energetics and energetic systems for American fighting forces around the globe. Energetics are explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, reactive materials, related chemicals and fuels used in war-fighting systems.

NSWC Indian Head is a big contributor to the local economy, with a workforce of more than 1,400 who are scientists, engineers and technicians dedicated to every aspect of developing and sustaining explosives. In addition, the installation has the largest concentration of Ph.D.s that include synthesis chemists, detonation physicists and formulation scientists.

NSWC Indian Head performs almost all of the Navy's energetics workload, with 75 percent of all explosives deployed in U.S. weapons developed by NSWC Indian Head. If any branch of the military experiences problems with current weapon systems, or encounters new threats on the battlefield, Indian Head Division collaborates and provides the appropriate solution.
