Artistic Inspiration Is a Natural Amenity in Harbor Springs
Association for Harbor Arts, a nonprofit organization that brings both performing and visual arts to the community, with a focus on children and young adults. AHA has art camps, music lessons and art classes as well as a mentoring program that matches young people with artists. The AHA has hands-on workshops and it features an “artist in residency” program which brings artists into the community. Growing Art In addition to the work of AHA, art can be seen growing in the Michigan town like a garden grows in the spring. There are local galleries like W•A•R•D Gallery, which represents 12 painters and four sculptors from as far away as Europe. Quarters Incorporated Talents is another eclectic and extensive art gallery and Boyer’s Glassworks offers glass sculptures ranging from Christmas ornaments to vases. There’s even an organized effort by The Harbor Springs Art and Antique Gallery Group to offer a “walkabout” of area galleries on Thursdays all summer, beginning in late June. A Music Town There is also an abundance of live music throughout the year. You can find theatrical performances at Bay View. Past performances include award-winning productions such as Oklahoma! and The Marriage of Figaro. However, in Harbor Springs, the music doesn’t stop at the theater. From May through October, several festivals and special events reflect the area’s charm. The Street Musique Downtown Concert Series takes place in downtown each Thursday night from late June through early August. Local entertainers and professional acoustical acts audition to serenade the crowds with flavors of jazz, folk, blues and classic rock and roll. There are also jugglers and magicians. Additionally, because of Street Musique, many downtown merchants stay open late on the Thursday nights for . Blissfest is a music and dance festival that takes place each July on a farm near Cross Village, about 15 miles north of Harbor Springs. Now, visitors and residents have yet another reason to enjoy the friendly resort town: the landscape, the climate and the steadily growing awareness of an unforgettable cultural experience.
