Shakopee, MN offers a variety of health care options and medical treatment.

The health care landscape in Scott County is diverse, with several attractive medical facilities within reach. In addition to caring for residents’ most pressing illnesses and ailments, the county’s hospitals and clinics serve the community by offering wellness programs and preventative screenings. These initiatives help ensure locals have healthy immune systems, strong bodies and sharp minds — a winning combination that results in less time spent under the weather and more time enjoying life.

Community Health Programs

Comprising a 25-bed critical access hospital and three clinics, Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague provides comprehensive primary care and offers patients quick, convenient access to specialty care.

The system also serves the community by operating a 1,200-member fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, free weights and group exercise classes, which works in conjunction with the physical medicine and rehabilitation department to help Scott County residents regain and retain their optimal health. Mayo Clinic in New Prague offers a Fit Kids program that is designed to help children lead healthier lifestyles. The program is taught to each third-grade class in the New Prague area, and Fit Kids instructors meet with classes two to three times per month, October-May.

“The Fit Kids program offers an opportunity for our school systems to focus on reducing the sedentary lifestyles of many children and increasing their nutritional knowledge,” says Mary Klimp, site administrator at Mayo Clinic in New Prague.

Another way Mayo Clinic in New Prague helps patients regulate their health is through the system-wide Mayo Model of Community Care initiative. According to Medical Director Dr. Marty Herrmann, the MMOCC is a strategy used to identify major diseases – like diabetes or hypertension – and establish effective treatment plans.

“Our goal is to reduce illness across the community,” Dr. Herrmann says. “There is currently no financial incentive for us to do this, but we feel it’s the right thing to do. It requires significant team management across the spectrum.”

Located in Shakopee, St. Francis Regional Medical Center (SFRMC) is an 85-bed facility that has been named one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals by Truven Health Analytics. In addition to its wide spectrum of health-care services, such as cardiology, women’s health and pediatric care, the medical center offers wellness programs that engage the community.

For example, its Health Powered Kids program provides schools, families and community organizations with lessons and activities that teach children how to make healthy choices regarding nutrition, stress management and exercise. SFRMC also offers Change to Chill, a free online resource designed to help teens achieve balance and reduce stress. Its Neighborhood Health Connection initiative awards grants to nonprofit organizations and local government entities that are committed to helping participants grow their personal connections through healthy activities.

Primary Care & VA Facilities

Part of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System, the Shakopee VA Clinic provides primary care, mental health care and counseling, and specialty care services to Scott County veterans. The clinic, serving 3,500 to 4,000 patients annually, has on-site social workers who can help veterans in need of additional support.

Both Fairview Clinics-Prior Lake and Fairview Clinics-Savage provide family medicine services, and wellness and disease-prevention services, including mammography. Fairview Clinics-Savage also offers physical therapy, podiatry, pediatric walk-in care and advance care planning, while Fairview Clinics-Prior Lake’s menu of services includes geriatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.

Another Savage facility, Allina Health Savage Clinic, comprises family medicine; obstetrics; gynecology (OB/GYN); and travel medicine, which helps patients prepare for and prevent illnesses, such as yellow fever, that may be acquired during international trips. The clinic also offers flu vaccines and screenings for diseases such as colon cancer.

St. Francis Health Services in Jordan, also part of Allina Health, is a primary care clinic that serves patients of all ages with pediatric care, gynecology (OB/GYN), adult and senior care, and laboratory and x-ray services.
