Greater St. Cloud has five hospitals and the largest is in the midst of a $200 million construction project.
St. Cloud Hospital, part of the CentraCare Health System, is increasing the number of private rooms, replacing older intensive care suites, expanding its cancer, heart and obstetric/gynecology units and adding more parking. The facility has grown considerably since its start in 1886 as a small community hospital founded by the Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict. With more than 3,600 employees, it is the area’s largest employer.
The hospital also houses the Central Minnesota Heart Center. Outside evaluators consistently give St. Cloud Hospital high marks. U.S. News and World Report named it among America’s best hospitals in 2005, 2006, and 2007. National hospital ranking company HealthGrades bestowed its award for clinical excellence in 2008 and patient safety for three years running.
The same year, St. Cloud Hospital also earned the agency’s distinctions for specialty excellence in cardiac care, cardiac surgery and joint replacement. Other health care outlets in St. Cloud include Abbott Northwestern’s Sartell Outpatient Center and HealthPartners. The latter recently added a sleep health center and has a walk-in clinic, a behavioral health center and its pediatric center among its facilities.
St. Cloud also has a Veterans Administration Medical Center and several rehabilitation facilities, including NovaCare Rehabilitation, which includes hand, occupational and physical therapies. The Village Family Health Service Center, a nonprofit organization, operates out of the St. Stephens State Bank building on North Third Street and offers counseling, classes and other wellness services.
For older residents, St. Cloud has a wide range of living choices. St. Benedict’s Senior Community is part of the CentraCare system and offers retirement, assisted living and income-based apartments. It also has a skilled nursing center, hospice care and special programs for residents with Alzheimer’s or other memory disorders.
Renovated and expanded, Talahi Senior Campus has resort-like amenities that include an indoor park, fitness center, private lounges for entertaining, plus dry-cleaning and home shopping services.
