A Variety of Cuisines Keep Jefferson City Appetites Satisfied

Thomas Jefferson would no doubt have enjoyed dining in the Missouri capital city that bears his name.
The nation’s third president was a gourmet, in addition to his many other interests. In Jefferson City, he would have found plenty to appeal to his palate – as today’s citizens and visitors do.
How about pizza with a Greek twist? Arris’ Pizza at 117 W. High St. across from the state Capitol is just the ticket. Arris Pardalos, a Greek native, who has made his namesake restaurant synonymous with good food and hospitality, started the popular city landmark in 1961. Along with the renowned pizzas, many of them named after Greek gods, Pardalos offers a selection of Greek dinners.
Switching to another nationality, Das Stein Haus at 1436 Southridge Dr. serves German specialties, as well as filet, prime rib and seafood. Das Haus of Europe, at 623 E. High St., serves German sausage, cheese and bread to accompany a variety of European wines.
Native Stone Winery and Bull Rock Brewery combine a bit of history with their wines and award-winning beers. Both are produced at the 300-acre Native Stone Estate on the bluffs of the Missouri River. The estate has been farmed by the family of owners Larry and Cara Stauffer since the 1960s. Another Missouri winery, Summit Lake, is located in nearby Holts Summit.
Dining in Jefferson City has to include a stop at a barbecue spot at some point, and Bandana’s Bar-B-Q at 2336 Missouri Blvd. is always a good choice. Bandana’s meats are prepared with a dry rub and then slow-cooked over hardwoods for anywhere from five to 14 hours.
After a meal – or even in its place – a visit to the legendary Central Dairy is always in order.
Open in Jefferson City since 1932, the ice cream counter at the front of the dairy at 610 Madison is always crowded with ice cream lovers.
