Schools throughout Tupelo-Lee County deserve high marks for offering a variety of programs that help students prepare for the career world. Here are some examples:

Higher Education

Students in Tupelo and Lee County have access to a variety of higher education options that include Itawamba Community College, which has a special link with high schools in Lee County. High school graduates who attend ICC have their first four semesters paid through an initiative called the Lee County/Marchbanks Helping Hand Tuition Guarantee Program.

Also making news at ICC is a $20 million Health Science Education Building that opened in 2013 to consolidate all eight health programs under one roof.

At the University of Mississippi-Tupelo, more than 120 courses are offered for undergraduate and graduate study, many designed to meet the needs of people with full-time jobs or family commitments. The Mississippi University for Women (nicknamed “The W”) features small class sizes and holds “Best Value” rankings from both Consumer Reports and U.S. News & World Report. Also within an hour’s drive of Tupelo are the University of Mississippi in Oxford and Mississippi State in Starkville.

Public and Private Schools

The Tupelo Public School District and Lee County Schools each enroll more than 7,000 students. TPSD has 86 National Board Certification teachers, and students are equipped with the latest digital technology tools. Tupelo High School, the state’s largest high school, offers 19 Advanced Placement courses and has 200 ACT Scholar students.

Lee County Schools consists of 13 schools with campuses in Belden, Guntown, Mooreville, Plantersville, Saltillo, Shannon and Verona. The district employs 900 people, and implements a School-to-Careers curriculum, helping K-12 students become more aware of career choices and the skills they will need.

For parents seeking private school options, Tupelo Christian Preparatory School challenges its K-12 students to excel in academics, athletics and acts of service in a Christian environment. Fine arts classes are available as well as the TCPS Leadership Academy for sixth-graders.

Community Development Foundation

Several Community Development Foundation programs are available in Tupelo to give students an introduction to choosing careers. For example, CDF’s Industry Education Day brings together educators and industry leaders for a conference-type event that involves a guest speaker and local plant tours, and allows teachers to better understand what companies need to prepare students for local careers. CDF also helps educate those interested in the technical and robotics fields with a Tek2Go Manufacturing Camp, Mississippi Best Robotics competition, Imagine the Possibilities Career Day and and Mississippi Scholars Tech Master Program.

Special Education

The Autism Center of North Mississippi, a nonprofit agency, provides services to schools and families to support children with a range of learning disorders, delays and behavioral issues. The center’s approach is clinically demonstrated to reverse the effects of autism in 20 to 30 percent of children..
