They might be talking about breaking hearts in the country-music capital of Nashville, but the only thing the golfers in nearby Murfreesboro are interested in breaking is par.

Golf Courses in Murfreesboro

Opportunities to do so abound in Murfreesboro, which has several courses that are not overly taxing to the average golfer. For example, the city-run Old Fort Golf Club is a flat 6,955-yard course that is easy to walk, even for seniors. There are enough water and sand challenges to keep things interesting, but not enough to deter novice golfers. As a result, Old Fort is extremely popular and the course can be crowded, especially on weekends.

Indian Hills Golf Club is a 6,800-yard course situated within a residential housing community. The Stones River meanders through the course and comes into play on several holes, as do a number of bunkers, making accuracy more important than power. That is never more apparent than on hole No. 12, a short 323-yard par-4. The length can make the hole seem easy, but the green is guarded by bunkers and has water running in front of it, making it deceptively dangerous.

Another course that can be conducive to both the casual and experienced golfer is Cedar Crest Golf Club. Most of the bunkers and water hazards are strategically placed in such a way that they come into play only for golfers who are hitting from the back tees (which makes the course 6,800 yards in length). Those who play from the shorter tees will likely avoid the trouble. The tree-lined fairways are wider on the front nine than on the back, allowing golfers to work through early mistakes before the course becomes more difficult.

For the true beginner or extremely casual player there is the city-owned Veterans Administration Hospital Golf Course, which has been around since 1945. The 2,545-yard, par-35 layout has a few scattered trees, only a handful of bunkers and no water in play, making it an ideal place for golfers to work on their shot selection. And you can't beat the price. A round of nine holes costs $6, and is only $5 for seniors and children.

The primary private facility in Murfreesboro is the Stones River Country Club, located on the banks of the Stones River. The course was built in 1947 and like many older courses is relatively short (6,348 yards). But it makes up for its lack of length with tight fairways, fast greens and plenty of sand and water hazards. The most difficult hole might be No. 11, a 416-yard par-4 with water along the left fairway and in front of the green, and a large bunker behind the green.

But if that hole proves to be too difficult, don't worry. There are plenty of more casual golfing opportunities available in Murfreesboro.
