Rutherford County Businesses
Rutherford County has become a regional hub for retail business, but it is also home to many other types of businesses. Here is a brief overview of five success stories within the Rutherford County business community:
The Avenue Murfreesboro
This retail destination opened in October 2007 and offers upscale shopping and dining within its open-air, pedestrian-friendly design. The $150 million, 810,000-square-foot attraction is conveniently located on Interstate 24 at Medical Center Parkway and is anchored by Belk department store and big-box retailers such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Best Buy. Other well-known tenants in The Avenue's 80-store complex include American Eagle, Barnes & Noble, Victoria's Secret, Yankee Candle and Old Navy, along with restaurants such as Romano's Macaroni Grill, Genghis Grill, LongHorn Steakhouse and Chili's.
Nissan North America's manufacturing plant in Smyrna spans 5.4 million square feet and has the capacity to produce 550,000 vehicles each year. Its current product lineup features the Maxima, Altima, Frontier truck, Pathfinder SUV, and Xterra compact SUV that are assembled by 4,400 employees and more than 1,000 robots. The Nissan North America plant opened in 1982 and tours are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Stones River Mall
The Murfreesboro shopping stalwart recently underwent a $52 million facelift that transformed it from a traditional mall to an indoor-and-outdoor shopping destination. Dillard's and JCPenney demolished their anchor stores and built new ones, and The Shops of Stones River now features an outdoor collection of retailers and restaurants joined by covered breezeways.
The Davis Groupe
This manufacturer of environmentally friendly products serves as a supplier to several Tier-One companies such as Nissan, Toyota and Honeywell. The Davis Groupe announced in 2009 that it is now also manufacturing environmentally friendly LED lighting, resulting in the creation of 200 Middle Tennessee jobs. Light-emitting diodes are an electronic light source that uses 60 percent less electricity, lasts longer than conventional lighting options and produces less waste.
