Nashville, TN Business Overview
While Nashville continues to be home to musicians and music-industry professionals, the health-care industry is also thriving in the area. In addition, the city serves as the headquarters location for a variety of businesses.
It's no secret that musicians of all genres flock to Nashville – and because of their success, the music business is booming in the city.
"The music business is largely centered on Nashville now," says Jody Williams, a vice president at Broadcast Music Inc.
BMI, which moved its home office from New York about a decade ago, is one of three member-based organizations that keep track of songwriters' performance royalties in the United States.
The Americana Music Association is also based in Nashville, and serves members in areas as far away as Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Other Nashville-based trade organizations include the International Bluegrass Music Association, which relocated from Owensboro, Kentucky, in 2003, and the Gospel Music Association, which was founded here in 1964.
As the region's largest nongovernmental employer, the health-care industry has been supported in Nashville for more than 40 years since the creation of HCA Inc. in 1968.
HCA, now the world's largest private hospital and clinic operator, is widely given credit for fueling the growth of health-care related companies in Nashville.
Since HCA began, Nashville has become home to more than 300 health-care companies that account for $50 billion in annual revenue and more than 300,000 jobs globally, according to data from the Nashville Health Care Council, an affiliate of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce that fosters the growth of the local health-care community.
The city is also home to 250 professional service companies that specialize in health-care related support services, including banks, accounting firms, law firms, and architecture and design firms.
Headquarters Located in Nashville
Many big-name companies have chosen to locate their headquarters in the metropolitan Nashville area, such as Nissan North America, Olhausen Billiard Manufacturing Inc. and Mars Petcare US.
The city's central location is a big draw, as eight states border Tennessee and 23 states are within a 500-mile radius of Nashville. In addition, three interstates – 24, 40 and 65 – intersect in Nashville, and 11 airlines and their affiliates provide flights from Nashville International Airport.
Nashville has also become a key distribution center for several companies; Macy's Inc., Wilson Sporting Goods, Gap and Aldi have chosen the Nashville area as a location from which to ship their products.
Other top companies with major facilities in Nashville include: Bridgestone American Holdings, Caterpillar Financial Services, Community Health Systems, Dell Computer, Dollar General, DuPont, Gaylord Entertainment, Healthways, Louisiana Pacific, Rogers Group, Tractor Supply Co. and Whirlpool Corp.
