Recreation opportunities are easy to come by in Natchez and Adams County, whether it’s nearby at one of the city parks or a short drive to a fresh-air getaway.

Traditional Parks

From golf and tennis to walking trails and picnic areas, the Natchez Parks & Recreation Department maintains a variety of parks and outdoor areas.

Largest is the 213-acre Duncan Park, which includes a golf course, eight lighted tennis courts and three lighted youth baseball fields. North Natchez Park has 10 outdoor basketball courts as well as playground areas and a recreation center. Other parks include Concord Avenue Park, Children’s Playground Neighborhood Park and Osceola Neighborhood Park.

For those who may just want to soak up a beautiful sunset, Natchez Bluff Park is recommended.

Natural and Historic Parks

For outdoor activities, Natchez State Park offers plenty for large gatherings or just for peace and quiet. There’s a large picnic pavilion on the lake, which itself is ideal for boating and fishing. The park also has cabins, camping, a playground and a nature trail.

Another option is Homochitto National Forest, which comprises 191,893 acres. Or to enjoy a scenic river and bottomland hardwoods, make the short drive to Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge in Ferriday, La.

The campus of the old Jefferson College is a prime spot for history. Founded in 1802, it eventually became a college-preparatory school before closing in 1964. The campus hosts a variety of history-related events throughout the year.

Boating, Canoeing and Kayaking

Water options are plentiful in the Natchez area. Lakes near Ferriday include Concordia Lake and Lake St. John, both ideal for waterway recreation. There are canoeing and kayaking opportunities on the Old River segment of the Mississippi River and its backwaters and bayous.

Golf

Golfers don’t have to go far, as the Duncan Park Golf Course offers an 18-hole course established in 1928. Just south of Natchez is Beau Pré Country Club, which opened in 1999, and the nine-hole course at Panola Woods Country Club, which opened in Ferriday in 1969.

Hunting and Fishing

Giles Island is a private hunting reserve that offers a variety of events and outings for hunters, and the Wildlife Management Area in Natchez is also ideal. The fishing is fine on area lakes, including the one at Natchez State Park.
