Since its opening in June 2007, Bear Trail Golf at Southwest Plantation has become the premier place to tee off in Onslow County.

Nestled inside the Southwest Plantation residential community, the lush greens and natural wetlands accentuate the picturesque scenery of this 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course.

This semiprivate course boasts rolling fairways and undulating greens surrounded by wooded areas.

A series of handmade wooden bridges enhances the charm of the course, which was almost entirely built by its owners.

Those are just a few of the reasons that Bear Trail has become such a popular destination for North Carolinians and others, says General Manager Barry Day.

“The word is traveling,” Day says. “They’re coming from all over now. It’s been pretty amazing.”

He recommends visitors book tee times in advance.

The course, which is more than 6,800 yards long from the championship tee, offers golfers a wide variety of challenges, but it’s not so difficult that new players can’t enjoy a good game. Bear Trail has a lot of risks versus rewards for golfers, Day says.

Good weather year-round and competitive pricing also add to the lure of Bear Trail – the first golf course to be built in Onslow County in more than two decades.

Bear Trail offers a driving range, temporary clubhouse and pro shop. The course also plays host to a number of tournaments.

It’s the only course in the county that offers full-service club fitting and club repair. And it’s continuing to add amenities.

Upcoming additions to Bear Trail include a permanent clubhouse, a swimming pool and hiking trails.
