“On Saturday‚ we have lots of music – gospel singing and cloggers – and North Carolina Sen. Edward Jones comes every year‚” says Delores Ward of the Enfield Police Department. Look for the addition of a carnival to the 2007 celebration in downtown Enfield.
Folks in Hobgood set aside the second Saturday in October to celebrate cotton. Take a ride through town on a cotton trailer‚ visit the local museum‚ browse vendor booths and enjoy live music at the Hobgood Cotton Festival.
The county’s largest agricultural festival‚ Halifax County Harvest Days‚ takes place in late-October. Now in its 16th year‚ Harvest Days showcases area history and culture with colorful exhibits and fascinating demonstrations.
“All the early 1900s equipment was powered by belt-run‚ single-cylinder engines – you know‚ anything that makes that chug-chug sound‚” says Dr. Zoann Parker‚ Halifax County Cooperative Extension director.
The military turns out in force for Harvest Days‚ too.
“Re-enactors from most wars come in costume‚” Parker says. “Displays are arranged chronologically‚ from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War to World War II‚ and we always have a presence of the modern military.”
The National High School Rodeo is the festival’s primary entertainment.
“Those kids perform rain or shine‚ and they do all the events you’d expect to see at a rodeo.”
