Residents in Wilkes County and the surrounding region are in good hands when it comes to their health and wellness. Large facilities such as Wilkes Regional Medical Center and its West Park Medical Plaza offer a variety of services and care, while the recently opened “I Can” Pediatric Therapies brings a focused treatment for youngsters.

Wilkes Regional Medical Center

North Wilkesboro has been home to Wilkes Regional Medical Center since the building opened in 1952, and it is still owned by the town.

With the expansion completed in the spring of 2013, the medical center has even more services for the community. The addition made way for a state-of-the-art wound care center, heart center and emergency department. The latter doubled in size, from 9,500 to 19,000 square feet, and the number of exam rooms increased from 19 to 29.

The 130-bed hospital also includes a skilled nursing unit and the family-focused New Beginnings Birthing Center where newborns may share rooms with their families 24 hours a day. Physician specialties include cardiology, family practice, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry, general surgery and urology.

West Park Medical Plaza

Wilkes Regional Medical Center is aided in its commitment to the health of Wilkes County by its subsidiaries and affiliates in the nearby West Park Medical Plaza. Formerly a shopping center, the plaza began its conversion to the medical services sector in 2000. WRMC's lauded home care and hospice program, which employs more than 200 nurses and health professionals, is housed in the plaza.

West Park is also the site of the medical center’s Valley Radiology Associates, which offers a wide range of diagnostics such as digital mammography, CT, ultrasound, and radiology and bone densitometry.

The hospital’s Wound Healing Center has been opened at West Park since March 2013, offering treatment of chronic wounds or wounds that will not heal with conventional treatment.

“I Can” Pediatric Therapies

Like its name suggests, “I Can” Pediatric Therapies gives its young patients an “I Can” attitude through its kid-friendly rehabilitative and support services. The center, located at 697 Edgewood Road in Wilkesboro, offers occupational, physical and speech language therapy for pediatric patients.
