County's health care is in good hands
The prognosis is positive for patients seeking medical care in Wilkes County, thanks to quality facilities and organizations such as Wilkes Regional Medical Center, West Park Medical Plaza and the volunteer Health Foundation.
Wilkes Regional Medical Center
North Wilkesboro has been home to Wilkes Regional Medical Center since the building opened in 1952. Still owned by the town, the 130-bed hospital includes a skilled nursing unit and the family-focused New Beginnings Birthing Center where newborns may share rooms with their families 24 hours a day. Physician specialties include cardiology, family practice, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry, general surgery and urology.
West Park Medical Plaza
Wilkes Regional Medical Center is aided in its commitment to the health of Wilkes County by its subsidiaries and affiliates in the nearby West Park Medical Plaza. Formerly a shopping center, the plaza began its conversion to the medical services sector in 2000.
WRMC's lauded home care and hospice program, which employs more than 200 nurses and health professionals, is housed in the plaza, as are the medical center's diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, wellness, dialysis and family centers. Wilkes Pediatrics is a three-physician practice located in the plaza. For their patients' convenience, it offers unconventional hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
The Health Foundation Inc.
The Health Foundation Inc. plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health standards of Wilkes County. The independent not-for-profit volunteer organization has worked with WRMC since 1991 to help provide the family center, dialysis center, the Wilkes County Public Health Dental Clinic, the mobile dental unit and the Ruby Purdue Blackburn Adult Day Care Center.
