Three parks – Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest‚ W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir and Stone Mountain State Park – allow people to learn and play outdoors at their leisure when they come to Wilkes County.
The Educational State Forest encompasses picnic areas and miles of trails for hiking‚ mountain biking and horseback riding‚ and a striking 360-degree panoramic view from the fire tower broadens observers’ horizons. The popular Talking Tree Trail informs visitors about trees‚ the site and the forest history with a push of a button on several trees along the way.
Rendezvous Mountain maintains its educational focus with programs for school children and visitors. “Our main duty is to provide forestry education‚ conservation and management practices to the population of North Carolina‚” says manager Alec Hurt. “We’re here to let people and kids see nature as it really is.”
Water is the source of life and the main source of entertainment at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir‚ where the dam creates a popular place for fishing‚ boating and swimming in the pristine waters. Camping‚ picnicking and hunting come in a close second.
Stone Mountain State Park draws hikers year-round‚ and trout fishermen endure the winter weather to cast their lines into the park’s many streams. Thirty routes for climbing on the face of Stone Mountain make for an adventure-filled day – or visitors can pitch a tent and stay for a weekend in one of several campgrounds.
As the second-largest state park‚ Stone Mountain has 75 picnic sites with 35 shelters. Visitors might get lucky and see a bear along the five-and-a-half mile equestrian trail. A campground reserved for backpackers offers a getaway for the bare-necessities folks‚ but if rugged isn’t in your vocabulary‚ there are spots for group camping and parking the RV. Land‚ water‚ mountains‚ forests – all that nature has to offer is waiting in Wilkes County.
