Fans of the great outdoors have a special place to escape in the vast network of trails constituting the Erie Canalway Trail.

The Canalway spans more than 360 miles over a mixture of different terrain between Buffalo and Albany. Ultimately, the Canalway will extend 524 miles thanks to the efforts of Parks & Trails New York in partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. The completed trail will run along New York’s historic Erie, Oswego, Cayuga-Seneca and Champlain canals.

The Canalway is currently nearly three quarters complete, and it serves to showcase the area’s majestic beauty and historic heritage. The current trail starts with a paved trail extending from Buffalo through Tonawanda. The Canalway then transitions to a stone dust trail from Lockport to Rochester where the road begins to alternate with a roadway through Syracuse and Utica. Finally, the trail switches between paved surfaces, stone dust trails and roadways before finally reaching the trail’s end at Albany.

More than 500 cyclists cross the Canalway Trail each summer in the Cycling the Erie Canal bicycle tour. To recognize countless other pedestrians and cyclists who complete the trek, the End-to-End Recognition Program provides qualifying candidates with a certificate attesting to the accomplishment, an End-to-End decal and inclusion in the End-to-End Honor Roll.
