Outdoor Attractions in McAlester, OK

McAlester's parks, golf courses, lakes and other outdoor attractions keep residents on the move.

McAlester Lake has 20 miles of shoreline, making it a favorite fishing destination.

McAlester residents stay active with recreational adventures ranging from mild to wild. Here are some examples:

Parks

The McAlester Parks Department oversees 13 parks, including 27.8-acre Will Rogers Park that houses Mike Deak Baseball Stadium, a little league baseball field and a multipurpose field. Another popular destination is Chadwick Park, with four tennis courts, wading pool, playground, Boys and Girls Club, The Coal Miners’ Memorial, War Memorial and God’s Little Angel Memorial, dedicated to the victims of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

McAlester Parks Department also maintains many trees that have been planted around the city, and their beautification efforts have led to the city becoming affiliated with a national tree organization and Oklahoma State University. Also within McAlester is the Garrard Ardeneum, a public home with landscaped gardens, antique furnishings, historical items and rental options for weddings.

Golf

Two courses in the McAlester area provide golfers with a public and private setting. The private McAlester Country Club spans 18 holes and measures 6,091 yards with a par of 71, Bermuda grass fairways and a history dating to 1911. Arrowhead State Park Golf Course in Canadian is an 18-hole, par 72 public venue at 6,761 yards.

McAlester Lake

Popular McAlester Lake, located five miles west of town, has 20 miles of shoreline for fishing and boating, and amenities like boat ramps, boat docks, fishing pier, campsites, playground, grills and a group shelter for picnicking.

Eufaula Lake

Oklahoma’s biggest lake – and the 10th largest manmade lake in the U.S. – extends from Checotah to McAlester along Highway 69. Attractions at Eufaula Lake include cabin rentals, canoe and kayak rentals, bass fishing, boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing and restaurants.

Scipio Recreational Trail

Located in the town of Scipio about 18 miles from McAlester, Scipio Recreational Trail Area has 25 miles of trails with hill climbs and water crossings that are ideal for hiking, dirt biking, mountain biking, ATVs and horseback riding. There are 300 feet of elevation changes over the 1,720 acres, and camping is permitted.
