Culture abounds in Muskogee, from music to art exhibits and wine tastings. Bull riding and outhouse races offer unique attractions and an escape from the ordinary.

Native American Art Events

Muskogee has a rich American Indian history and several art exhibits which explore that culture. The Five Civilized Tribes Museum hosts the Art Under the Oaks American Indian Art show and festival, which offers arts, crafts and music. The American Indian Pow Wow at Bacone College celebrates American Indian culture through art as well. The pow wow incorporates singing, dancing and other traditional activities, as well as an American Indian arts and crafts market.

Adventurous Attractions

Hold on to your seats for some of the best bull riding in the nation. Each January the Muskogee Civic Center hosts the Bull Riders Inc. National Finals, where 30 of the top bull riders in the world compete in an event that concludes the season. The event is sponsored by the Muskogee Creek Nation Casino, Muskogee Chamber of Commerce, and Bull Riders Inc.

Outhouse races take place as a part of Muskogee Heritage Days. Outhouses are constructed by participants and can be made of any material. One team member must ride inside the outhouse while the other two team members push. Heritage Days also offers a talent showcase as well as arts, crafts and food.

Muskogee Mural

Artist Lance Hunter seamlessly blends art with Muskogee history with his mural on the wall of the Gaddy Drug store. The mural is adorned with a vintage-style image of a young woman holding a tray with old-fashioned Coca-Cola glasses, the Gaddy name, and the words “Quality You Can Trust”. The mural stands about 12 feet tall.

Symphony in the Park

In the summer months, the popular Symphony in the Park concert performances happen in beautiful Honor Heights Park. Many visitors and residents enjoy bringing a picnic to further enjoy this musical celebration, complete with fireworks.

Food and Wine

It doesn’t take a wine connoisseur to enjoy the wine, beer and food tasting put on by the Muskogee Rotary Club every April. Located at the Papillion at Honor Heights Park, the annual party raises money to provide clean water to developing countries by “turning wine into water”.

Want more wine tastings? Check out the annual Shriner’s Flying Fez Wine Tasting Festival. Located at the Bedouin Shrine Center, the event allows festival-goers to taste local wines, as well as food, all while enjoying live music and even fashion shows. Held in February, the festival benefits the Shrine Hospital Fund.
