Muskogee Golf and Country Club is the oldest country club in Oklahoma.
Founded in 1907, the Muskogee Golf and Country Club is the oldest country club in Oklahoma and one of the state’s historic sports treasures.
The traditional 18-hole course is lined with mature native trees along the rolling fairways and features bent grass greens. In 1924, renowned course architect Perry Maxwell redesigned the grounds. Over the years, the course underwent many changes until finally in 2000, golf course designer Tripp Davis led a renovation and restoration project revitalizing the old Maxwell style.
The course record is 59, held by Bob Dickson, a Muskogee amateur and Oklahoma State University star. Marlene Hagge holds the course record for women, 68. The club was the site of the 1970 Women’s United States Open, won by Donna Caponi.
Plenty of challenges lie within the serene setting.
“Our most difficult handicap hole is Number 2. It’s tight,” says Rip Ohly, PGA, first assistant golf pro at the club. “Number 13 is uphill and hits into the south wind, but for someone who hits long it’s not too bad.”
Number 10 is a tough water hazard, Ohly adds. When asked about a favorite hole on the course, Ohly says it’s hard to pick just one.
“Ten and 11 have water and are beautiful,” he says. “But Number 3 is also one of my favorites. It runs along an edge and there’s a creek that runs through it. On the back nine, Number 16 is nice, too. But I’d have to say three and 10 are my favorites.”
The clubhouse is well fitted for parties and meetings and features casual fine dining in Maxwell’s Restaurant, which is open to the public. With tennis courts and a swimming pool open from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends, the Muskogee Golf and Country Club is a full-service traditional recreational club.
