A handful of high-profile, multinational businesses have their origins in Eugene, including Broderbund Software, Nike and Taco Time. Most businesses in Eugene feature a small number of employees, but the city also has larger employers. Here are seven of the largest:

University of Oregon

With more than 4,500 employees, University of Oregon was founded in 1876 and is known for its multiple research projects that occur at 19 research centers and institutes. In total, 80 buildings on campus accommodate 24,000 students and faculty members. The Oregon Ducks sports teams compete in the NCAA's Pac-12 Conference.

PeaceHealth Medical Group

Founded in 1890, PeaceHealth Medical Group operates nine West Coast hospitals, including Sacred Heart Medical Center-University District in Eugene. The facility's name reflects its location near the campuses of University of Oregon and Northwest Christian University, and the list of hospital services includes a new Spine Center that opened in late 2014.

Lane County

More than 2,000 employees oversee a number of government departments that serve the 350,000 residents of Lane County, including those citizens who live in Eugene and 11 other cities as well as 80 unincorporated communities. The largest Lane County departments are Public Works, Health and Human Services, Sheriff's Office, and County Administration.

Eugene School District 4J

Serving about 85 percent of Eugene as well as the Town of Coburg and a small part of Linn County, Eugene School District 4J is a K-12 system in the southern Willamette Valley. More than 16,000 students attend 18 elementary schools, a K-8 program, eight middle schools, four high schools and an alternative high school.

Springfield Public Schools

A staff of nearly 1,300 people is employed by Springfield Public Schools, including 600 teachers and 22 principals. The district has 10,600 students who attend 12 elementary schools, five middle schools (including a charter school), and five high schools. One of the high schools features an arts-focused curriculum, and another focuses on leadership.

City of Eugene

Caring for the second-largest city in Oregon, a staff of 1,300 people are employed by the City of Eugene. A city council form of government is in place with eight members representing each of Eugene's eight wards. The mayor is one of the eight council members who serve the city's population of 140,000 residents.

Monaco Coach Corporation

Prices start at around $550,000 for the upscale RV homes sold by Monaco Coach Corporation, which employs about 1,000 people at their Town of Coburg facility near Eugene. The origins of Monaco trace back to 1968, and the company quickly gained a reputation for comfort and luxury throughout its full line of premium motorcoaches.
