Reynolds Homestead

Reynolds Homestead is the birthplace home of R.J. Reynolds, famed founder of the tobacco manufacturing giant. The tourist attraction is located in Critz and is actually designated as a Commonwealth campus of Virginia Tech. Besides being a restored home, Reynolds Homestead also serves as a forest resources research center with business hours of 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The main building was constructed in 1843 as a two-story brick home and includes many of the original family furnishings. Meanwhile, the grounds also include several outbuildings, a brick three-floor kitchen, brick milk house, a log icehouse and log granary, and a family graveyard along with a slave graveyard in the midst of 717 acres of fields and woodlands.

The homestead is a registered state and national landmark, and is open for tours April through October from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children, and group tours are welcome.

The facility also hosts events such as concerts, plays, discussions, lectures and private celebrations, plus a number of workshops and teaching seminars are scheduled. Arts and crafts get-togethers are also offered during both day and evening hours throughout the year.
