Recreation Opportunities in Roanoke Rapids, NC
Vast lands, heaps of wildlife, a river and three lakes make the Roanoke Valley a great destination for outdoors enthusiasts.
Fishing, hunting, kayaking, paddling and canoeing are only a few of the many activities that make this place a hub for alfresco fun and recreation.
“It’s a great place to live and visit,” says Lori Medlin, president and CEO of the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB).
Rockfish Capital of the World
The Roanoke Valley boasts an especially popular fishing season due to its proximity to the Roanoke River. In fact, Weldon, located in the heart of the Roanoke Valley, is known as the Rockfish Capital of the World. Every spring, the rockfish, or striped bass, swim upriver to spawn.
“We get tons of fishermen from all over the world,” says Christina Gordon, director of tourism and marketing for the Halifax County CVB.
Shad fishing is also popular on the river during March and April. And largemouth bass, crappie and catfish make for a fun day of fishing in the lake. With Gaston Lake, Roanoke Rapids Lake and Kerr Reservoir, there are plenty of lakes in the area to choose from.
“You can come in and fish to your heart’s content,” says Medlin.
Hunting also draws a crowd.
It’s “huge in our area,” Gordon says. “We’re No. 1 in the state for whitetail deer and wild turkey hunting.”
Though many enjoy hunting on their own, plenty of guides are available to show people when and where to go. Carolina Woods & Water, East Carolina Outfitters and Woodstock Guided Hunts are a few that can help hunters get the most out of their hunting experience.
The Bear Swamp Sportsmans Club, a hunting preserve comprising tall pines, swampy bottom lands and young pine thickets adjoining fields of green grasses, provides great deer and bird hunting. Dove and duck hunting are popular too in the Valley because of waterway access.
