Halifax Community College Offers Variety of Programs for Students
Halifax Community College’s many programs and partnerships make it a great place for all one's educational needs.
With three transfer associate degree programs, it’s easy for students to go on to a four-year institution.
“Our transfer programs allow our students to seamlessly move on to college in the UNC (University of North Carolina) System and most private colleges throughout the state of North Carolina,” says Ervin Griffin, president of HCC.
Students can choose from 17 associate programs in applied science, ranging from accounting to computer information technology to interior design. Seventeen diploma and/or certificate programs also provide options for students.
Griffin says the school's most popular certificate and diploma programs include cosmetology, phlebotomy, practical nursing, welding technology and basic law enforcement training.
“We also offer an array of continuing education programs for our service region,” Griffin says.
Plenty of Partnerships
HCC also has a number of partnerships with higher educational institutions in the region, including its Teacher Preparation Partnership with Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University’s Wachovia Partnership East. The Teacher Preparation Partnerships allow students to take their first two years at HCC and then transfer into the teacher education program at either of those two universities.
HCC has an Adult Degree Completion program with Chowan University as well, and a partnership with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and Halifax Regional Medical Center lets registered nurses pursue a Bachelor of Nursing degree through NCCU at HCC.
The Roanoke Valley Early College (RVEC), implemented in 2009, is a partnership with Weldon City Schools that allows students to start their higher education journey while still in high school.
Training Programs
Schools aren’t the only beneficiaries of HCC’s many programs. Their small-business center offers free consultation to local businesses and those who might want to start a business in the service region, offering customized training programs for both new and incumbent workers at regional businesses.
Griffin says he hopes HCC can start programs in the areas of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, robotics, HVAC repair and maintenance, and barbering. He also hopes to expand the school's arts program by offering classes in the dramatic arts.
“We are a very diverse institution of higher education that serves the myriad of needs for the citizens of Halifax and Northampton Counties,” he says. “We look forward to expanding our programs to meet the expressed needs of our service region.”
